Something New
I had a great time reading the journals submitted by my General Psychology students...some great writing. What really struck me is that psychology is still new to everyone and that I've been putting topics on the blog that you haven't covered or even thought about yet. Consequently, today I decided to try something different. What I'd like for you to do is to write about something you learned in class or in your text that you didn't know before. You might even go the "second mile" and tell of a situation that you observed that relates to psychology.

I can relate this to chemistry class. I had never taken a chemistry class until I did this past summer. I knew nothing about it. As I glanced through the book I thought to myself there was no way I was ever going to learn this stuff and I just knew I was going to have to repeat the class. Well, I did pass the class, with a "B" and I was so excited! I learned how to balance equations and I even learned some of the elements, in order, and how to spell those elements. I learned the elements by making up these sentences that made no sense whatsoever, but that I could relate to. In relation to Psychology class, I have learned something new about a pain-reducing method that I did not know before; I did not know that there was such a thing as a "walking epidural" -it allows the mother to move around more freely and has less side effects than the traditional epidural (Chapter 3). My sister had an epidural with her second child and she had to stay in the bed and she said she could only feel a spot of pain about the size of quarter in circumference when she had contractions. I think it helped her a lot more than when she had her first child and didn't have the epidural!! After her delivery, I think she had to remain in bed for a while due to the traditional epidural.
Great examples, Kimberly. It kind of makes you wonder what else there is to learn. In fact, the more I learn, the more I realize that I don't know. Does that make sense?
